We're doubling the bracket — 32 products from Tournament 8

LaunchBuff is expanding from 16 to 32 products per tournament starting T8. Here's the honest story of why: more demand than we ever expected, a growing backlog, and a community that genuinely surprised us.

When we launched LaunchBuff in June 2026, we designed the tournament for 16 products. Eight free entries, eight paid slots, a clean bracket, four rounds over two weeks. We thought that was plenty.

We were wrong. And we're genuinely glad about it.

What actually happened

We expected modest demand. A directory with a tournament mechanic is a niche concept — we weren't sure how many founders would buy in.

The community proved us wrong immediately. Within the first two tournaments, the free queue started building. By Tournament 7, we had over 400 products waiting for a free entry slot. Paid slots were selling out before each tournament opened. Products were queuing weeks in advance.

Alongside that, something we track closely: LaunchBuff's domain rating has grown from zero to DR 71 in under three months. For context, most directories take a year or more to reach DR 50. The tournament format, it turns out, drives the kind of community engagement that backlink profiles reflect — real people sharing real matchup results, voting, and embedding winner badges.

We also quietly crossed $500/month in revenue within our first 60 days. We're sharing that not to boast — it's still early — but because we want to be transparent that this is a real, growing product and not a side project on borrowed time.

None of this was in the plan. All of it changed the plan.

The problem with 16 slots

A 16-product bracket means 8 free slots per tournament. With a two-week cycle, that's 8 free entries every fortnight. At our current backlog size, a product joining the free queue today waits roughly two years for a slot.

That's not a queue. That's a queue that breaks the promise of the platform.

We also noticed the paid backlog growing. With only 8 paid slots per tournament, there are products ready to pay for a guaranteed spot that can't get one.

The format was the bottleneck, not the interest.

What changes from Tournament 8

The bracket doubles to 32 products.

  • Free slots: 8 → 16 per tournament
  • Paid slots: 8 → 16 per tournament
  • Rounds: 4 → 5 (adds a Round of 32)
  • Tournament duration: stays at two weeks

Everything else stays the same. Same head-to-head voting format, same two-week cycle, same badge for winners, same permanent listing pages for all entrants.

For products in the free queue: your wait roughly halves. For products considering a paid entry: more slots means less competition for them — and a larger, more credible field to compete in.

A 32-product bracket also just feels more legitimate. A product that survives five rounds and wins a LaunchBuff tournament from a field of 32 has beaten more competition, which makes the badge worth more.

A genuine thank you

We want to say this plainly, without the usual startup-marketing gloss: we did not expect this level of support.

A site that launched three months ago with no existing audience or brand recognition now has over 1,300 products submitted, a growing community of voters, and founders from around the world referencing their LaunchBuff tournament results in their launch announcements. That happened because of early adopters who took a chance on an unproven format.

The bracket expansion isn't a business decision dressed up as a community decision. The queue is real, the backlog is real, and the right thing to do is make room.

Tournament 8 will open in the coming weeks. We'll announce the date and the updated format ahead of time so everyone in the queue knows what to expect.

Thank you for being here while this was still being figured out. You're the reason it's worth figuring out.
